Generative AI is revolutionizing the way we work and create. It's truly like having the most knowledgeable person in the world as your assistant, ready to help you with various tasks, from content creation to problem-solving. To me, it feels like a cheat code or the biggest life hack, and it continues to surprise me and prove its value in my life as it improves day by day.

I’ve read and consumed (what feels like) all of the how-to AI content on the internet, and have been an avid generative AI user from both a personal and professional perspective since it ChatGPT 3 was released in November 2022. I was even featured in Business Insider for my novel uses of ChatGPT at home!

I took all of my learnings and distilled it into this digestible guide that will help you understand the fundamentals of AI, its potential applications, and provide you with practical tips on how to start using it effectively to boost your productivity and creativity. I hope it helps!

1. Understand the Basics

- Simply put, AI is like having a highly capable assistant that can help with various tasks, from content creation to problem-solving

- Large Language Models (LLMs) are a type of generative AI that can communicate using human language and generate text, code, and more

- AI models can generate a wide range of content, including text, images, audio, and even code, based on the prompts you provide

2. Adopt the Right Mindset

- Avoid falling into the traps of denial or panic about AI taking your job, or the implications of AI down the road; instead, embrace AI as a tool to enhance your productivity and creativity

- View AI as a colleague with strengths and weaknesses that you need to learn to work with effectively

- Focus on how AI can help you achieve your goals more efficiently and free up time for higher-value tasks

-Remember: it’s not perfect, but it’s surprisingly capable, and it’s improving at an exponential rate; the AI you use today is the worst it will ever be

3. Learn Prompt Engineering

- Prompt engineering is the essential skill of crafting effective prompts to get useful and relevant results from AI models

- Provide context, be specific, and clearly communicate your intentions in your prompts to get better results

- Iterate on your prompts, provide more information, or ask the AI to interview you to gather necessary details for optimal output

- Experiment with various AI models and products to find the ones that best suit your needs and workflow - don’t pay for them until you know you love it and will use it often!

- Consider factors like speed, capability, cost, ease of use, and specialization when choosing AI tools

- Remember that you generally get what you pay for in terms of AI model quality, so invest in the right tools for your needs

5. Integrate AI into Your Workflow

- Leverage AI for writing assistance, from brainstorming ideas to editing and proofreading your content

- Collaborate with AI for product design, using it to generate ideas, iterate on concepts, and create prototypes

- Utilize AI as a sounding board for ideas, to get feedback, and to help you make better decisions

- When you have things to figure out, take a walk with an AI chatbot and use it as a sounding board, just like the author did when planning the contents of the video

- Use AI as a coding assistant to help you write and refine code more efficiently (if your work or play requires code, that is)

-Keep a human in the loop: AI is powerful, but it's not perfect. Make sure to review outputs and provide feedback to help the AI learn and improve

- Identify opportunities to enhance your products or services with AI capabilities
